VNS has new Certified Lymphedema Specialist

Ann Galkowski, physical therapits, has become a Certified Lymphedema Specialist.

Ann Galkowski, physical therapist at VNS for the past 11 years, has just completed a Lymphedema Certification course that gives her expertise in procedures and best practices treating patients suffering from lymphedema.  There are very few lymphedema certified therapists in the Rhode Island and southern Massachusetts region, but there are numerous seriously ill palliative care and hospice patients, as well as home care patients, who can find greater comfort and quality of life with specialized treatment practices for their lymphedema.  VNS has two other occupational therapists, Pam Lam and Joan Janek, who are lymphedema specialists.

What is lymphedema?  Lymphedema is swelling in one or more extremities that results from impaired flow of the lymphatic system.  The swelling may range from mild to severe and disfiguring.  Lymphedema develops as a result of damage to or dysfunction of the lymphatic system, and breast cancer treatment is the most common cause of lymphedema.  While there is no cure for lymphedema, compression treatments and  specialized physical therapy may help reduce the swelling and discomfort.

Ms. Galkowski now brings this specialized expertise to the Rehabilitation Department of VNS.  Additional VNS Rehab specialties include Parkinson’s “Big and Loud”, stroke, and vestibular, fall recovery, cardiopulmonary rehab, and orthopedics.
